Daibutsu, Kamakura

Daibutsu, Kamakura
Daibutsu in Kamakura, June 2010. There were thousands of school kids visiting that day. It was still great fun.

Meat Shop

Two meat shops in Otawara Tochigi-ken. These are both in the pub district neighborhood. But I don't think either of them sell meat. Someone lives above Meat Shop Torikin and when I walked by he was just opening the metal doors but I did not see any meat. The other meat shop appeared to be an abandoned haikyo building.

Meat Shop Torikin that doesn't sell meat.

Haikyo House

This a haikyo (abandoned) house in a neighborhood in Otawara, Tochigi Japan. Due to the real estate bust of the 1990s and stagnant population growth, you will find a lot of these types of buildings throughout Japan. This one is right in the middle of an active neighborhood.

Please visit Budget Trouble blog that has plenty more great photos from Japan and where you can submit your own Show Me Japan photos.

Old School Haikyo

I found these cool haikyo photos from here.

They are from an old school somewhere in the Kanto area. What is interesting are some of the objects that were left behind long ago.

A pair of shoes and other items.

Appears to be tablets of medication.

An old record player.

A microscope oddly placed on an old bed.

A music amplifier.

An old projector.

What's Wrong with this Building?

A Haikyo or abandoned building from somewhere in Hokkaido, Japan

Hmm, what is this building? Is it a school or a recreation center? Let's see.

It looks like it is not being used. It's abandoned. I wonder why?

This room looks to be in really good condition. Clean, organized, tables set-up for events or meetings. But why does this building appear to be unused? Wait, what's that through the window in the other room?

What's going on in there? It looks like I can see the sky through the roof.

Uh oh. What happened here? I think I know why this building is not being used.

Look, there is a giant hole in the roof.

How did that happen? An earthquake? Too much snow? A structural deficiency?

That's one big sky light. Probably the building should be torn down. It doesn't look safe. Who is responsible for this?

These very interesting photos are from this excellent Haikyo website. Apparantly this building is from somewhere in Hokkaido.

Haikyo - Exploring Japanese Ruins

If you are interested in the exploration of Japanese Ruins or Haikyo you should check out this blog post from Michael John Grist of MJG: Japan about his exploration of Sports World in Izunagaoka.

This is one of the best Haikyo blog posts I have read. The reason is because the way Michael describes his adventure, you feel like you were there. You can feel the eeriness and the sadness of this now abandoned place while imagining what it must have been like years ago full of people.

Abandoned Road to Nowhere

I found these cool Haikyo abandoned places pictures from this website. These are some pretty impressive pictures of an abandoned elevated roadway somewhere in Japan. If you know where, let me know.

I wonder if the roadway collapsed due to an earthquake, neglect or some other reason. Pretty bizarre to see this collapsed roadway just sitting there abandoned.

I wonder what would have made this section collapse?

The way this section is twisted it doesn't look like it will take too much more to bring it down such as a moderate earthquake or minor soil movement.

Haikyo - Exploring Japanese Ruins

I previously posted pictures of an eerie abandoned hospital. There are all kinds of abandoned places in Japan including theme parks, hotels, hospitals and resorts. Exploring these places is called haikyo.

Here are some pictures of what appears to be an abandoned hotel or resort.

This one is really strange because it looks like the people just disappeared one day and left all their stuff in the room. I have seen lots of other haikyo pictures of places that also look like the people just up and left one day and left all their stuff. Very odd.

This one looks like a meeting room or dining room. Most businesses in the Unites States that go out of business would have a going out of business sale and everything would be liquidated such as the furniture, etc. But many of the pictures I have seen of abandoned places in Japan such as this one show that alot of stuff is just left there. Maybe Japanese people don't like to buy used stuff.

These look like pachinko games.

The pictures are from this good haikyo website.

Haikyo - Exploring Japanese Ruins

Haikyo is the name for exploring Japanese ruins or abandoned buidlings. I found some websites on this subject and the photos are pretty amazing. Whether it is due to the economic problems or the declining population, I think both, aparantly there are alot of abandoned places in Japan.

What is really weird is that alot of them seem like the people just left everything where it was and disappeared. In the U.S, if a business or whatever goes out of business, usually the contents such as furniture, etc. are sold. Maybe Japanese people do not prefer used furniture or other items.

Also in the U.S., these items would have been carted off by looters. I've seen some pictures of abandoned theme parks where there are still displays of samurai armor and other interesting and cool stuff. Why hasn't someone snagged that stuff?

Another crazy, crazy thing are the photos of abandoned medical clinics or hospitals. In some of the photos you can see what appear to be people's medical records as well as syringes, medical devices and chemicals. I can't believe they were just left there.

Below are some photos from this really amazing Japanese website on Haikyo. They are photos from an abandoned hospital. Some pretty creepy pictures.

Here is the outside of the hospital.

Here's what looks to me to be some sort of medical record. Crazy.

Looks like a dentist chair. Ouch.

An examination table. Whoa.

You can see from this picture that there is an active neighborhood right across the street from this hazard.

Another examination room.

More medical equipment.
