My name is Jon and I live in Los Angeles. I've visited Japan a lot so that's what this blog is about...visiting Japan, Japanese history and samurai movies.
Daibutsu, Kamakura
Daibutsu in Kamakura, June 2010. There were thousands of school kids visiting that day. It was still great fun.

2011 Tsunami Footage
Amateur footage demonstrates the frightening speed with which Friday's tsunami destroyed the city of Kesennuma, Japan.
Thanks for putting these together... no matter how often they are seen, every time they leave me feeling sick with shock. It's a good reminder in these days when we're all obsessed with the news coming out of Fukushima Daiichi that there really was a true disaster of such horrifying proportion.
It's truly shocking to see a city being destroyed... I can't imagine how the people felt to watch it. It really does make you reflect on your own worries... and how really, they aren't that bad.
Although it's so difficult to watch them for some reason I have to sometimes and I don't know exactly why. They are horrible to see, especially the ones where you can see people driving on the road not realizing the tsunami is approaching. I can only imagine that most or all of those people I saw in their vehicles did not survive. I picture myself in that situation and wonder what I would do. I hope we never see this again. Unfortunately we probably will in our lifetime.
