Japanese Bugs - I don't like them

I am not a big fan of bugs in general but Japanese beetles are especially disgusting and freaky looking. But my two small boys love them just like the average Japanese child. I don't know why beetles are so popular in Japan. They look nasty. Below are a couple of beetles that my two boys had kept in a small box. Before we returned to America we let them go in a small park in Otawara.

There are also a lot of dragonflies in Japan. But unlike Japanese beetles, I think the dragonflies look pretty cool. Here is a dragonfly I tried to get close to before it flew away. Sorry for the blurriness. I was taking the photo quickly with my phone.

  1. Ahh...you mean dragonflies?

Yeah, Japanese bugs can be a little much. I think the beetles are kind of cute, though. At least they're harmless.

  2. DOH! You're right. Lemme fix that. I was thinking dragonflies but typing fireflies for some reason. Thanks.

  4. I think all Japanese boys love bugs!! My kids at Elementary school was often pick up an assortment of all types of creepy crawlies and loved shoving them in my face and telling me all about them.

  5. I used to catch lizards and such when I was little but I think these beetles would still have freaked me out then. :) Of course California doesn't have beetles like this so I would have thought they were monsters probably.

  7. I love lizards. They're like little dinosaurs. :)

  8. @Toshogu,
But lizards are soft and squishy. o.O

  9. And sometime their tails fall off when you grab them and the tail squirms by itself. :)

  10. Every Japanese boy seems to be an expert on beetles. A popular game is to have a couple of beetles fight sumo style. On the summer you can find a section of live beetles on big supermarkets, the most expensive ones reaching over 30,000 yen!!

  11. @Toshogu,
and that is exactly why I am not fond of lizards. That squirming tail, squirming by itself. Eeewwww.

  12. I have never seen bigger cockroaches and dragonflies than I have in Japan. I haven't been to the tropics yet though.

Did your boys catch those beetles in th wild. If they did, how did they do it?

  13. Yes they did catch them in the wild but I'm not sure how they found them. I assume they picked them up with their hands. I was still in LA when they collected them.

Bugs are freaking weird here! I remember going to Oita once and having my first encounter with a giant, orange bee. That shit freaked me out!

  15. Yeah, I've seen those giant bees or wasps or whatever they are also. Hate those things.
