Daibutsu in Kamakura, June 2010. There were thousands of school kids visiting that day. It was still great fun.

Old Japanese House

This is an old Japanese house in Otawara. I like the weathered look of the wood siding and the tile roof.

  1. I love these kinds of finds. More to the point, I just love living amongst this kind of environment. It's a simple thing, a single house, but it adds so much to the atmosphere of one's everyday, in terms of adding a cultural, traditional, historical, aesthetic/artistic air to the feel of the place.

  2. I agree. And there are so many "simple" finds like this in average Japanese towns like Otawara.

  3. I even see these in Sendai - but I must admit that I am surprised they are still standing. When I first came across these, I thought they would all fall in a bigger earthquake.

  4. They look like they would fall. There was a fair amount of moderate damage here in Otawara from the 3/11 quake. I saw one old building that suffered damage. Most others fared well though.

  5. These type of houses are awesome and we are lucky that we have quite a few in my part of Gifu, Japan.

  6. Why haven't I discovered your blog before?! I'm so glad you left a comment on mine! I see we share, amongst others, a fascination in old houses.

Now, please excuse me, because I want to read your older posts! :)
