Another Old Japanese House

Here is another old Japanese house I found while walking around Otawara, Tochigi-ken. This appears to have doubled as a work house or farm house due to the size and shape. But there is no farm land in the immediate area anymore. Of course there used to be a lot of farm land around here 40 or 50 years ago.

  4. Yes, me too. I wish I could quit my job and move into a house like this.

  5. It appears that the home was extended at some point. The section in the back has a different roof and the break in the roof line is telling.

Old wooden Japanese homes are built well. It is often the case that a wooden traditional Japanese home will be dismantled if need be and relocated elsewhere to preserve its character and history.

The house itself may have been a workshop. The broken windows indicate that part of the structure may not be in use. The living area most likely is.

Candle making businesses in Uchiko town (on Shikoku) started out in merchants homes and as the business grew, so did the merchants dwelling, as an extension of the business. Many traditional Japanese craftsmen practice adjacent to their home if not inside of it.

  6. Yes I agree it could be an old workshop. There a few other workshops in the area as well.
