Japan Photos - Japanese Bugs

I am not a fan of bugs although my boys love Japanese beetles. In my opinion, Japanese beetles and spiders are pretty nasty looking creatures. On my recent trip to Tochigi Japan I snapped a few photos from around the Otawara neighborhood.

Here are two Japanese beetles that my son collected. We let them go in the park before we returned to America.

This is an extremely nasty looking spider. It's web spanned a small road (about 7 feet or 2 meters wide). The web was just high enough for a small car to go under or if I walked in the middle of the road but had not been paying attention and walked along the side of the road I would have gotten a face full of the web below. Frightening.

This is a pretty cool looking dragonfly that let me get really close.

  1. Yeah, my boys love them too. I'm always telling them to let the stuff go, but sadly, that rarely happens.

  2. My boys had collected a large number of beetles but they were okay with releasing them into the park. I convinced them they would have a nice home around the tree.

  3. I came to love those "Tombo" (dragonflies)... it's funny, but back in Australia we tend to avoid them. But in Japan, they're so much nicer for some reason.

Try this experiment next time you're there (I assume it works everywhere)... just hold your finger up vertically near a Tombo. They'll almost certainly land on your finger - like a moth to a light. I couldn't believe it - but it worked everytime when we were in Japan this summer. Lots of fun.

  4. Hmm, I don't know. I am not a fan of bugs. But maybe I will try for the dragonfly because they look pretty cool (hand harmless).
