Daibutsu in Kamakura, June 2010. There were thousands of school kids visiting that day. It was still great fun.

Japan Trip update

This is just a brief update of my current trip to Japan, my third in the last 6 months. When I return to the States I will post some photos.

On Sunday I went to Nikko with my family and visited some of my wife's relatives. In Nikko we took our children to a local park with a playground. In spite of the cloudy and relatively cold weather, the park was crowded with children.

Today the weather was clear and warm and so we visited the Tochigi Prefectural Museum in Utsunomiya. This is an excellent museum surrounded by a beautiful park in the middle of the city of Utsunomiya in Tochigi prefecture. The museum has exhibits ranging from dinosaur bones to stuffed native Tochigi animals such as bears and foxes to giant beetles. There were also some very interesting exhibits of one of my favorite subjects, medieval Japanese history. These included painted screens of important figures such as Ashikaga Takauiji as well as other samurai era exhibits of armor, swords, and other historical artifacts. I could have spent much of the day there but with two small children we took the tour in approximately one hour, spending most of the time in the dino bone and giant beetles exhibits. :)

On Thursday weather permitting we plan to travel down to Kamakura which I have never visited before so I look forward to that.

  1. Looking forward to the pics. We're planning on going up to Nikko this August (hot, I know)... and I've never been before. Any suggestions/thoughts much appreciated.

  2. If you have never been then of course you should see Toshogu. I also would suggest driving up to Lake Chuzenji area. Beautiful views and waterfalls.

  7. Kamakura was great. I will post some photos when I return to America. The old stump from the famous gingko tree at Hachiman shrine that fell recently is covered in green shoots. That is a good sign that the tree may grow again.

  8. Tornadoes28, enjoy! How long are you going to be here?

AdelaideBen, if you're going to be here in August, you should try watching the nighttime Noh performance in front of Rinnoji (August 20 and 21).

  9. I'm leaving on Monday but I might be returning again in August. That performance sounds very interesting.

  10. Tornadoes, ask your wife's relatives to get you tix, normally they sell out within a day or so. First 5 rows, center stage, otherwise it's not worth it. We'll be there on Aug 21.

  12. While in Nikko, don't miss Nikko Edomura, a samurai theme park. We went there in '08 and had a blast. The place is set up like an Edo-period village. If you ever watched a samurai film and wished you could walk right through the screen, it's kinda like that. Sure it's not as culturally significant as, say, the Tokugawa shrine, but still a lot of fun!
