The Way of the Samurai

I found this video on a site called Joost which I had never heard of before. The video is called "The Way of the Samurai" and it appears to be a video from PBS. I have not had a chance to watch it yet but it looks interesting.

Update 4/9/09: Apparently this video and any others from Joost are not viewable in Japan. Sorry about that. When I was in Japan I had this same issue with the popular site Hulu.com which has full length TV shows but is not viewable in Japan as well.

  1. Interesting video. It's always fascinating to learn about the way of the Samurai. Ultimately, power corrupts completely. The early European's had respect for the Japanese but the Japanese still thought them bewildering and barbaric. Narrated by Richard Chamberlin is fitting as he starred in the Shogun series that ran in the 1970's in the USA. That was my first introduction to the feudalistic culture of Japan.

  2. I agree but it went both ways. The early Europeans also thought the Japanese were backward and so the Euros sent missionaries to "teach" the Japanese the proper religion.

I thought that sounded like Richard Chamberlin. I have not watched the entire video yet but I will.

The feudal history of Japan is what I am most interested in and I have read several books on that aspect of their history.

Might be a good video - unfortunately (and ironically) it is geo-blocked and "unavailable in my area".

Joost is good though in general.
