The Geiko's Journey

The Geiko's Journey series.

This was an interesting series. It is my understanding that a Geiko is a Geisha in Kyoto dialect. But it was also my belief that when a Geisha or Geika performed, they always performed in their white makeup. But most of the performing the Geiko in this series did was not in white makeup.

I like the Matron or head mother of the Geiko. She has a smokers voice but a funny and outgoing personality.

Nice find and interesting as I just visited Kyoto for the first time, but wasn't entertained by any geisha though!

  2. I really enjoyed this. Thanks for putting it up! I never knew that there were geisha in Aichi - which is the prefecture I live in.

As far as I understand... you're right about the Geisha/Geiko term usage, same thing, just different dialect.

I believe that maiko and "performing geisha" wear the white makeup, other geisha don't. I'm curious to know why there were no maiko in this show, even without the makeup, there certainly weren't the elaborate kimonos of maiko. Maybe that's just a tradition being kept in Kyoto.

  3. Jason, you mean you went to Kyoto but was not entertained by Geisha? I can't believe it.

Melanie, I guess this shows to me that there is a lot more to the Geisha, Geiko and Maiko then I realized.
