1000 Samurai in Nikko

This is the 1000 Samurai Festival from Nikko, Japan in 2004. It celebrates the great processions of samurai and daimyo to pay homage to the great Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu at his mausoleum at Toshogu in Nikko. Funny to see samurai wearing glasses and smiling. Very fun festival. I highly recommend it.

  1. I can still cope with the glasses, but a smiling samurai? ^^ PS: When is this festival? It really looks worth a visit.

    1. Yes, they should have a serious intense look on their face. The maain festival is in May. I think end of May so the next one is in a week or 2.

    1. It was very cool. Back in 2004 I knew nothing about Japanese history and the history of the procession. Now I am very very knowledgeable of Japanese history and the shogun Ieyasu. I wish I could see the festival again because it will have a lot more meaning.

  3. It looks like a fun celebration. If it was feudal times and real Samurai, not so much fun?

  4. During the time this commemorates there was no more war so the samurai had it pretty easy.
